What’s a chapter of your life you’d title “The Hard Years” — and what got you through it?
It was definitely when my grandmother became bedridden with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. I had never seen her in bad condition before. She had sick before I was born. But since then, the sickest I’d ever seen her was with the flu.
I couldn’t imagine being at home if something happened. I woke up the next morning and saw what was happening. She had a feeding tube and I didn’t know what to do. And for some strange reason or something, I gave her a feeding and her medicine. Then, I put her nebulizer on her and gave her a breathing treatment.
I knew what was happening. But for some reason, I thought it would help. She was listed as a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate), for those that may not have known.
This was the unbelievable difficult to witness. But, I hope that it helped in some way. Maybe it decreased the struggle. But, for me, that was the hard year!
