Oscar night was Sunday and it was filled with some great highs and some weird lows. Obviously, the big movie expected to win big was Sinners. The movie that dominated the box office and the Oscars with 16 nominations! The most in movie history. Four wins, with the Lead going to Oscar award winning actor Michael B. Jordan. Beautiful performance, beautiful moment and a beautiful guy. Internally and well, I don’t have to explain the external. That one is quite obvious. History or should I say, Her-story was made when Autumn won for best cinematography! So many meaningful wins, Jesse Buckley did a phenomenal job. This too, was her year! I loved her speech celebrating her first Mother’s day in Ireland, here in the US on the Oscars stage. Ryan Coogler won for best original screenplay and with his best friend, Ludwig whom he met at university, who also won for original score.

It was a real family affair with the cast of the film. It was just lovely to watch. And it was great to see Conan back on stage hosting. Also in the memoriam, there were a few people missing. Like James Van Der Beek, Eric Dane and Demont Wilson from Sanford and Son. I don’t know how that happened. That was a bad thing.  But now, I have to address the elephant in the room.

Since the start of the award season, Timothee Chalomet was the one to beat. Everyone knew that he was going to win. They did really consider anybody else. This was an open and shut case. Then, I don’t know what happened from the start to now.  I mean,  I love Michael B.  and I love Timothee. They were my favorites and I really wanted Michael to win. But, this campaign was heavily promoted for Timothee.

I’d seen him in interviews than other actors, women and men included. I think what happened was, people were telling him this is your year! You’ll get it. So, I am not accusing him of being lazy. Because that’s definitely not the case. But sometimes when people are in your ear telling you, You got this thing! You are going to win, you can get really confident. And that confidence can turn into arrogance. It can make a person complacent and comfortable. Like they don’t technically have to work for it.

But when people get in your ear telling you things like this, these are the moments when you need to buckle down and work harder. He had sent a lot of Marty Supreme merch to different people and athletes specifically. And when he sent merch to Misty Copeland, that is what made his comments about Opera and Ballet look hypocritical. What has been referred to as, “OperaBalletGate, the tide really changed for him after he said that. Even with voting closed before that, in the court of public opinion, that comment really hurt him. Because it hurts a lot of people. Everyone doesn’t feel that way about Opera and Ballet.  If no one cared about it, it wouldn’t still exist.

I am not sure if any of you saw the awards Sunday, but the applause for him, when they were announcing the nominees, was very light. It wasn’t anything like before, when he was nominated twice before. This is what I think, I am very outspoken and that’s not always good or welcomed. He got overzealous, he listened to too many people and that could have hurt him worse.

Sometimes, we can block our blessings by getting in our own heads and staying in our own way. We have to let go and let him lead us. His movie had 9 nominations. Unfortunately it won none of them!

Timothee will get there and I know this. I know he wants to be among the Greats in Hollywood. But, I want him to relax. Just trust his talent and everything else will fall into place. And I am not saying that he shouldn’t chase greatness. But he’s already great. He doesn’t have to try. Just breathe and work. God will bless him with all the accomplishments that that he has ever dreamt of.

There were awesome moments and others that were not. But, I am very happy for all of the nominees and winners. It was nice to see the show. I just hope that some good lessons will be learned about and from this
